Whitley Bay restaurant Shikara has marked its one year anniversary by raising over £1,000 for the Freeman Hospital’s Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF).
The modern Indian eatery hosted a sell-out birthday party on Wednesday 26 June featuring a specially created five-course anniversary meal alongside a complimentary drinks reception and live entertainment.
As well as playing host to a charity raffle in aid of the the charity, 20% of the evening’s takings were also donated, with a grand total of £1,189.40 being raised.
Lorraine Embleton of CHUF said: “On behalf of the charity, I would like to thank Shikara for organising a party to celebrate one year since the restaurant opened and donating 20% of their profits to CHUF. This was a very kind gesture and is appreciated by everyone at CHUF. The money they have raised will be used to purchase equipment, facilities and aftercare for the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital. The staff and customers’ support and generosity is very much appreciated by us all.”
“I wanted to support a local charity who I have find-hand experience of,” said restaurant owner Azad Miah. “My four-year-old son was admitted to hospital for an operation last year so I know first-hand how important childrens charities are. I really want to support them so they can carry on doing their invaluable work for kids with heart conditions long into the future.”
Helmed by owners Azad Miah and award-winning chef Shohid Ahmed, the pair have taken over fifteen years of passion, enthusiasm, determination and unbridled culinary ambition to the next level in this stunning restaurant on Whitley Road.
Offering Bangladeshi and South Asian dishes as well as fusion recipes from India at an affordable price, Shikara has been a draw for food fans from right across the region with its ambitious menu and its striking architecture that has seen the entire front facia of the building removed and replaced with a spectacular two storey glass panelled arch offering panoramic sea-views.
Azad wished to thank the generosity and support of the restaurant’s customers.
“We’ve been blown away by the loyalty and support the local residents have shown Shikara this past year,” said Azad. “We’re so pleased that our contemporary take on quality Indian food has been a roaring success and it’s been a pleasure to host so many birthday parties and special events at Shikara. Long may it continue!”
